WFSGI joins ‘Bicycle for All’ at UNESCO HQ

WFSGI CEO Emma Zwiebler and Head of International Sports and Cycling Michelle Smyth recently represented WFSGI at an event to mark World Bicycle Day at UNESCO HQ in Paris. The event was organised by the UNESCO Core Group leading the Bicycle for All directive which is composed of the Governments of Austria, Azerbaijan, Kenya, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Netherlands and Poland.

The purpose of the roundtable was to illustrate the significant role that cycling can play within UNESCO’s broader agenda, focusing on its impact on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Bicycle for All seeks to underscore the advantages of the use of bicycle as the sustainable, climate-friendly and easy to learn tool to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. Through the initiative, governments are supported to include cycling in their educational policies, to improve cycling infrastructure and take further actions to promote cycling to support sustainable and healthy lifestyles.

WFSGI gave an overview of WFSGI’s new Strategic Plan and our aim to embed cycling into our top strategic priority of getting the world to move more. The need for a multistakeholder coalition and, in particular, the importance of the sporting goods industry voice going forward was stressed along with the need for policy to not only be created on increasing cycling but it be appropriately funded, resourced, and implemented at country level.

This was the first stage in exploring how to support Member States in implementing the ‘Bicycle for All’ directive and exploring the proposal of a resolution at UNESCO’s Ministerial Conference (MINEPS) in 2025.
